Letters from the Heart ⎯ Commemoration through Immersive AR

Where modern commemoration meets AR and storytelling

Project Overview

Located at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance, Letters from the Heart is an immersive Augmented Reality Experience that serves as a testament to the potential of AR in storytelling and commemoration. Users explore the poignant theme of unread letters from the World Wars, through composing 'Letters of Gratitude,' and exploring authentic letters from that era, enriching both the educational and emotional facets of the experience.

Project Snapshot

  • This experience aims immerse users in the theme of unread wartime letters, educating users threough existing artefacts and enhancing the connection of Australians to our wartime heroes.

  • The narrative of this experience draws inspiration from the Indigenous symbolism of the kookaburra, a revered native bird believed to serve as a messenger between the human and spiritual realms. In certain Aboriginal cultures, the kookaburra holds the role of guiding lost souls back to their families and safeguarding them. Its laughter-like call is considered a signal for sacred ceremonies, casting the bird as a guardian or messenger.

Guided by Kookoo, the storytelling character in this experience, users navigate this AR realm, users explore the theme of unread letters from the World Wars and engage in a symbolic delivery of their letters to fallen soldiers.

  • 'Letters from the Heart' serves as a testament to the potential of AR in storytelling and commemoration. It underlines the idea that technology, when coupled with empathy and history, can create immersive experiences that honor the past and guide our future.

Project Disclaimer

This experience introduces Kookoo, a fictional character inspired by the kookaburra’s role as a spiritual messenger in specific Aboriginal communities. It is crucial to recognise that while no indigenous peoples were directly involved in this project, in reality, genuine representation and consultation with indigenous communities would be imperative to avoid appropriation and respectfully draw inspiration from the kookaburra’s lore in certain Aboriginal cultures.

This project deeply respects the cultural significance of these narratives, focusing on stories of service and sacrifice. Kindly be mindful that certain content may be distressing. Your understanding and sensitivity are appreciated.
