Government Mobile App

Speak Out ⎯ The App to Report Verbal Assault.

Streamlining the reporting process for victims of verbal assault

Project Overview

Speak Out is a conceptual app designed to empower victims of prejudice motivated crimes/ incidents, in particular verbal assault. It streamlines reporting, access to resources, and tracking previous incidents in one platform—eliminating external forms.

The design addresses usability and cultural barriers often associated with reporting crime, targeting vulnerable and minority user groups to make reporting in Victoria more accessible.

Project Snapshot

  • A mobile app that allows users to report verbal assault, access resources, and track previous reports all in one platform (no external forms.) This app aims to be easy to use and accessible for all users, regardless of English language and digital literacy abilities.

  • Centered on the theme of citizen power, my project is fuelled by personal experiences as a woman of colour, and a profound understanding of the challenges faced by marginalised communities.

Like many others, experiencing prejudice-motivated incidents like verbal assault is a common occurrence. Unfortunately, these crimes often go unreported, leaving perpetrators unpunished. To address this issue, I created Speak Out, in hopes to rectify existing gaps in the reporting system, and empower Victorians to speak out against verbal assault, contributing to the creation of a more just and inclusive society.

  • If this product was to be implemented in reality, its viability would be heavily dependent on the decisions and regulations set by the Victorian government and police. Challenges such as the treatment of verbal crimes, investigation difficulties, financial implications, cultural barriers and existing laws must be considered.

User research in this project highlighted design flaws in reporting processes, a cultural stigma around non-physical crimes, and a lack of awareness on reporting procedures. For the app to succeed, it is imperative to address cultural factors, enforce stricter legal consequences, and enhance education and awareness surrounding these crimes.
